Domestic abuse does not have just one form. It is not just the black eye and damaged arms. Controlling finances; limiting who you communicate with; insulting your dreams; or separating you from relatives; are all examples of subtle forms of control. And if you live in the diaspora, things can get even more complicated. People don’t like to discuss it. However, when your life is in danger, being silent is not a virtue. You did not leave Nigeria to be a prisoner in someone’s home.
Abuse thrives on quiet, fear, and manipulation. Some women and men are suffering behind closed doors, fearful of deportation, disgrace, or financial ruin. You have to realise that no papers, no prestige, and no relationship, is worth your peace or your life. The UK has systems in place—helplines, shelters, legal protections—especially for immigrants. They may not be perfect, but they exist. You are not without options.
Jack’s Life Lessons For Teenagers
Culturally, many of us were taught to endure. To manage. Pretend for the sake of society. However, such approach is not appropriate in this context—especially when it comes to abuse. It is not your responsibility to fix someone who is causing you physical, mental, sexual, or financial harm. Your sole responsibility is to defend yourself and your children, if you have them. Healing begins when you acknowledge that you deserve better.

And if you see abuse happening to others, speak up. Check in. Don’t say, “Nah, their husband and wife matter.” Be the voice they need when they’ve lost their own. Sometimes it only takes one individual to say, “This isn’t right. You can get help.
Remarkable Lessons From Mothers-In-Law
Freedom is not just about changing countries. It’s about walking away from what breaks you. Don’t let fear stop you from seeking safety. There is help. And you are worth it.
