If you're moving to the UK with children; or planning to have them—you must plan intentionally for child care. Don't expect that things will work themselves out. The system here differs significantly from that in Nigeria. Everything, from childminders to nurseries and school wrap-around care, must be booked, paid for, and scheduled ahead of time. This is neither Grandma's house or a neighbour’s fast favour. It’s regulated, structured, and expensive.

Child care in the UK can quickly deplete your income if you are not prepared. Full-time nursery care can cost hundreds of pounds per month, particularly in locations such as London and Manchester. However, there are scholarships and support programs available—if you know where to search. For example, the UK government provides 15-30 hours of free childcare each week for three to four-year-olds. Some families are eligible for tax-free childcare support too. Educate yourself. Apply early.

Balancing work and kids can be difficult, especially when there is little or no family support. That is why many Nigerian immigrants organise support groups. Find other parents you trust, and collaborate. Share school runs. Take turns babysitting on weekends. You don't have to accomplish everything alone. Lean into the community. It takes a ‘village’, even in the United Kingdom, to care for kids.

Also, follow child protection laws. This country does not jeopardise children's welfare. Never discipline a child in public in the same way you do at home. recognise your rights, the children’s rights, and most importantly, recognise your boundaries. Understand the requirements for safety, consent, supervision, and communication. Your stupidity will not be excused, especially when children are around.

If you're going to Japa with kids, child care should be part of your plan, not an afterthought. Prepare early, whether it's for school admissions, learning about local government resources, or creating a day care budget. It is critical to your mental well-being. Remember that raising children overseas is different; but with intelligence and organisation, you can do it successfully.
