Many immigrants believe that investments solely involve money—stocks, shares, real estate, or enterprises. However, investments can take other forms than money. An in-kind investment can be your time, knowledge, mentorship, or simply being present in locations where you can contribute value. The concern is that many people neglect this aspect, resulting in missed opportunities to expand their networks and influence.
Widow Empowerment - Empowering Widows
Cash investments are typically easier to track. You invest money in a savings account, a property, or a business and monitor its progress. However, in-kind investments frequently provide longer-term, less evident benefits. Teaching a younger Nigerian overseas how to manage the system is an investment in-kind. When you volunteer in your community or help to build credibility for your people through professionalism and integrity, that is also an investment in kind. When you share knowledge, through affordable digital means, to benefit Nigerians near and afar; that’s also investment in-kind. These are the seeds that may not pay dividends immediately but will sprout into networks, goodwill, and opportunities later on.
Is Voluntary Work Really Free?
The balance, however, is important. Don't expect that in-kind investments will replace financial investments. Both must operate together. For example, you could invest funds in a home while also utilising your experience to assist a buddy with immigration procedures. You are increasing your riches while also broadening your influence. When unexpected possibilities arise, it is often as a result of the kind investments you have made.
Empowering Orphans, Widows and Widowers
In the Nigerian community overseas, where trust is sometimes short, in-kind investments might help to mend connections. If you are recognised for assisting, guiding, or providing honest counsel, you will become a resource for people. This reputation is itself an investment because credibility is a currency that money cannot buy. So, while you put your cash into stocks and savings, also remember to invest your time, knowledge, and integrity.
