Education is often the first big reality check for many who Japa. In Nigeria, we are used to a certain style of learning; sometimes focused on memorisation, cramming before exams, and less emphasis on critical thinking. In the UK, education is a different ball game. Whether you’re coming here to study or to put your children in school, you need to understand that here, the emphasis is on analysis, research, and independent thinking. You can’t just “read to pass”; you must read to understand, discuss, and even challenge ideas.

One common mistake, is assuming qualifications from Nigeria will automatically be accepted here. Some may be, others will need equivalence checks, or even further study. If you’re in a profession like law, medicine, engineering, or teaching, be ready to go through additional certification, exams, or bridging courses. The UK protects its labour market by making sure people meet its standards, and that means you’ll need to invest time and money to align with those standards. Do your research early so you’re not shocked by the requirements.

If you're coming here for higher education, you should also consider the financial implications. Tuition prices for overseas students are high, and even if you get home fees later, living expenses will still be significant. Beyond the classroom, the UK education system provides access to a multitude of resources, from libraries, online journals, to career advisors; but they only benefit you if you use them. Many immigrants pay for courses but fail to reap the benefits because they are too focused on employment and survival. Maintain a balance; remember that you came here to learn, and to earn.
