The reality of marriage abroad is rather different. Stress, cultural clashes, changes in gender roles, and isolation may all rip even the strongest marriage apart. Divorce among Nigerians in the diaspora is on the rise, not because people have changed, but because the environment shows shortcomings in Nigerian society that were previously hidden. If you're married and live overseas, you should be aware that this place will put your relationship to the test like never before.
Aunties, housemaids, neighbours, and spiritual mentors are not as readily available here as they are back home. It's just you and your partner, dealing with job, kids, bills, and the stillness that comes in between. Communication breaks down. Respect erodes. Roles get blurred. And soon, people who once vowed forever, only share rent and resentment. Divorce becomes a silent outcome, whispered about but widely felt.
Remarkable Lessons From Mothers-In-Law
For those going through it, realise that divorce is not the end. It may feel like failure at times, but it can also be liberating. The key thing is to approach it with dignity and transparency. If children are involved, prioritise their well-being over your own feelings. Protect both your legal and financial interests. Do not allow bitterness to transform you into someone you will not respect later. Also, don't make decisions based on fear; instead, seek support rather than gossip.
And if you are still married, keep it like gold. Communicate. Compromise. Respect one another's growth. Seek assistance before things collapse. Also, don't compare your marriage to others. Social media is a falsehood; many couples are suffering silently. Focus on creating something that can withstand change and pressure.
Jack’s Undergraduate Empowerment
Keep reminding yourself of the benefits of marriage, and your reasons for the union. Remember that nothing good comes easy; it takes sacrifice, endurance, perseverance and more.
If some could keep their marriages, so could you. Consider learning from best practice, and keep investing in your marriage.
After all intents and purpose, if the marriage doesn’t work; take consolation in your trying and failing, rather than not trying at all.
