Kinship extends beyond family and acquaintances. It's about community, belonging, and shared responsibility. In Nigeria, kinship is natural. Neighbours raise their children together, extended families share resources, and everyone knows each other's tales. In the United Kingdom, a sense of kinship is not automatic. People live in silos, mind their own business, and may not even know their next-door neighbour. If you don't actively seek for kinfolk, you may feel rootless and isolated.

Kinship creates a sense of identity. It reminds you that you are part of something larger than yourself. When you interact with your family, you are reminded of your traditions, values, and resilience. It helps you stay connected to your roots while adjusting to new circumstances. Without kinship, many Nigerians abroad drift into isolation, adopting foreign lifestyles that slowly erode their cultural grounding. Kinship helps you stay balanced. It allows you to navigate the new without losing the old.

The strength of kinship is also in support. A group of kin can gather around you in times of need, whether it's illness, job loss, or financial trouble. Nigerians living abroad frequently form clubs, cultural groups, or Religious organisations, to replicate this kinship system. Those who participate in such groups frequently thrive more than those who isolate themselves. Kinship is a sort of social capital that, like money, can be invested and withdrawn as needed.

Kinship also provides an economic advantage. Communities can pool their resources, share knowledge, and provide opportunities for one another. Nigerians abroad who respect kinfolk are ready to recommend one another for jobs, exchange housing advice, and support small companies. This is kinship in action. When one person succeeds, the entire community benefits. Without kinship, progress is slower because you are left to figure everything out on your own.
