Have you seen the contract you signed when you got the job? Have you read it? Or did you simply grin, nod, and sign? In the United Kingdom, your terms of service are more than simply fine print; they provide you with protection and power. Too many Nigerians work for years in unfamiliar places, overworked or underpaid, because they never read or disputed the terms of their employment.
Knowing your rights as an employee is crucial. You are entitled to holiday pay, sick leave, maternity and paternity benefits, and even pension payments. If your employer does not meet those obligations, you have every right to question them. This is not a place, where HR disregards complaints. In the United Kingdom, legal systems such as ACAS and employment tribunals exist to protect workers, including immigrants.
Do not let the fear of losing your job prevent you from asking questions. If your work hours are changed unfairly, your responsibilities are increased without discussion, or you are routinely disregarded, do not remain silent. Read your contract again. Speak with your union, if you have one. Consult citizens for advice. Stand up for yourself in a respectful and professional manner. You're not a slave. You are a worker with rights.
Understand the distinctions between zero-hour contracts, agency work, permanent positions, and freelancing assignments. Each has unique rules, risks, and benefits. Understand what you're getting into, before accepting an offer. And if you work in a poisonous environment, start preparing your exit. You did not travel oceans to be treated unfairly. Protect your peace. Maintain your value.
Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration
Remember that employers have expectations, and so should you. Do not merely work hard. Work smarter. And never forget that your labour is valuable, and you have every right to expect fair treatment in return.
