Domestic violence knows no boundaries. Many immigrants carry trauma, unresolved anger, and harmful cultural conditioning with them. But, unlike in Nigeria, where abuse is frequently ignored or excused, the UK has strict laws. Lay your hands on your spouse or child, and it could be the last time you see them under your roof. The system here is designed to protect victims rather than egos. Domestic violence can ruin your life, your reputation, and your future. It’s more than just a personal matter; it’s a legal one.
Domestic violence in the United Kingdom extends beyond physical assault. It includes verbal threats, emotional manipulation, financial control, and even isolating someone from their support system. If you shout at your partner regularly, monitor their movements, or threaten to withdraw your support if they don’t obey you, you are walking on dangerous ground. You may think you’re “in charge,” but the law sees it as coercive control; and it is punishable. Police don’t need long stories. Once a report is made, they act swiftly, and you may not get the chance to defend yourself before consequences kick in.
Remarkable Lessons From Mothers-In-Law
Seek treatment if you are battling with anger, prior trauma, or stress. There are community resources, therapeutic choices, and support groups, including ones specifically for African immigrants. It is preferable to seek healing, than let bitterness poison your life. And if you’re the victim of violence, speak up. No amount of humiliation or “what will people say” is worth sacrificing your peace or life. Even if you are in a strange country, you deserve to be protected and treated with decency. Silence just empowers the abuser.

To be clear, domestic violence is not a culture; it is a crime. Your partner is not your property. Your kids are not your punching bags. And the law will not wait for your village elders to resolve the issue. Whether you’re a man or woman, walk in self-control and mutual respect. You didn’t japa to go to jail.
