The cultural transition is one of the most shocking experiences for most people. Things do not operate in the same way. Everything appears to be upside down at first, including how people speak, dress, socialise, work, raise children, and express emotions. And if you’re not mentally prepared, frustration will consume you. But here’s the thing: culture change isn’t your enemy. It is an invitation to grow. You do not have to abandon your identity, but you must adapt, in order to succeed.

In the United Kingdom, time is money. People appreciate directness, processes, and personal space. Don’t carry “African time” to appointments and expect others to take you seriously. Don’t assume everyone will automatically understand your tone, humour, or body language. Learn the norms. Observe how people behave. Ask questions. The faster you understand the cultural codes, the less friction you’ll face.

Parenting is a major area of culture clash. What worked in Nigeria may not work here – not because you are incorrect, but because the culture is different. The laws are tight. The expectations differ. You will need to strike a balance between authority and emotional intelligence. This does not imply that your values are out of touch. It implies you must convey them in ways that are appropriate for where you are.
Furthermore, the work culture is distinct. Whatever your age, your input is important here. Fear does not demonstrate respect; rather, competence and teamwork do. Do not limit yourself. Speak up at meetings. Be proactive. Learn the system and work with it. The moment you stop resisting the culture, you’ll find it easier to find your place. Culture shock is real, but culture growth is possible. Embrace the change. Learn the new. Blend it with your roots.
