Living with a chronic disease overseas presents new obstacles that many Nigerians did not anticipate before Japa. Back home, it is common to rely on family assistance, traditional remedies, or even informal healthcare. The healthcare system in the United Kingdom is structured, yet it is also stretched and can be slow at times. If you have a chronic illness, you cannot afford to be complacent about your health.
The first step is to register with a GP (General Practitioner) as soon as you have settled. This is your entry point into the healthcare system. Don't wait until your health deteriorates before taking this action. Having a GP guarantees that your medical records are built, your history is monitored, and you can be referred to experts whenever necessary. For chronic illnesses, this consistency is critical. Skipping appointments or ignoring symptoms can be dangerous, especially in a system where referrals and tests can take time. You must be proactive and organised.
Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration
To manage a chronic illness effectively, it's important to educate yourself about your condition, ask questions, and keep track of your treatment. While some Nigerians abroad may be hesitant to ask questions, it's important to remember that this is your life, and doctors and nurses expect you to engage. If you don't understand a prescription or are concerned about side effects, ask for clarification.
Submission, Gratitude, Faith and Hope
If you qualify for disability support, apply for it. If you need adjustments at work, request them. Too many Nigerians suffer in silence, because they do not want to be seen as weak. But silence will not protect you. Knowledge and action will.
And to be even more proactive, get your matters in order. If you have debts, make arrangements to clear them. If you haven’t a will, consider making one. If you’ve caused pain and injustice, make efforts to right the wrongs. If you’re spiritually inclined, reflect on the present, past and future; and do the needful.
And if death turns up, you’d at least know that you gave life your best shot.
