56. COULD YOU END UP A SECOND-CLASS CITIZEN? It’s a difficult thing to face, but it must be stated: even if you don’t mean to, you can japa and still feel like a second-class citizen. Not because the UK imprinted it on your forehead, but because of the way you positioned yourself. Being a foreigner does not inevitably make you inferior. However, if you do not rise beyond the “just manage” mindset, if you do not fight for your position, and if you continue to take less than you are worth, you will remain on the sidelines while others advance.
Second-class status isn’t just in your passport. It’s in your thoughts, actions, and expectations. It manifests itself in the way you approach chances; afraid to ask, hesitant to learn, and afraid to lead. You work the hardest yet get the least recognition because you never speak up. You stay in the same job for 10 years without promotion because you don’t want to “make noise.” You avoid networking rooms because you feel you don’t belong. That’s not humility. That’s self-erasure. And in this land, silence keeps you small.
If you do not take charge of your own development, the system will place you in its own category. And that category is frequently the one with the lowest pay and the most work. However, you can break the trend. Ask questions. Take classes. Learn how everything works. Do not just try to “get by.” Aim to rise. Engage with your rights. Challenge unfair treatment. Prepare yourself for leadership. If you continue to play small, don’t be surprised if you fall behind or, worse, become invisible.
You see, no one will give you relevance here. You claim it. You work for it. You grow into it. Don’t let anyone limit you to your accent, job title, or difficulties.
Arise, take opportunities, invest in yourself, acquire useful experience, make yourself relevant, add value, and you’d be surprised at the results.
