One of the easiest ways to lose your way abroad is to forget why you came. Many Nigerians arrive in the UK with clear goals (to build a better life, further their education, support family), but get distracted along the way. The distractions can be subtle: chasing social status, keeping up with appearances, or comparing yourself to others who seem to be doing better. Without a sharp focus on your mission, you risk drifting for years without real progress.

Jack’s Mindset

Focusing on your mission starts with clarity. Write down your top three reasons for being here and make sure every major decision aligns with them. If your goal is to buy property back home, does your spending reflect that? If your aim is to upskill, are you actually investing time in courses and training? The UK offers endless opportunities, but not all of them are for you. Knowing your mission helps you say no to good opportunities so you can say yes to the right ones.

What is your mindset?

Discipline is the muscle that keeps your mission going. Life here will continuously put your resolve to the test. The high cost of living may urge you to take any job simply to get by, but if that employment leaves little room for your long-term goals, it may not be worthwhile. This is not to say that temporary sacrifices should be avoided; rather, it is to ensure that those sacrifices are strategic rather than random.

Another technique to staying focused is to check your work on a frequent basis. The United Kingdom moves quickly, and months or years can pass without notice. Set up quarterly check-ins with yourself to ensure you're still on track. Adjust your plans as needed, but never lose sight of the broader picture.
