After decades of working, striving, and creating, it becomes clear that retirement is closer than expected. The anxiety that it will be too late to plan for old age is significant, particularly for those who believe they have not done enough. However, the truth is that, while the ideal time to prepare was yesterday, the next best moment is now. It is never too late to start.
Money is important in preparing for old age, but it is not the only consideration. It's about safety, comfort, and dignity. Whether you are in the United Kingdom or back in Nigeria, the reality is that old age without preparing can be devastating. In the UK, the system may offer support, but it is not always enough, and in Nigeria, the lack of structure means you must rely heavily on your personal resources. The wise immigrant will stop putting off the conversation and face it squarely. What will sustain you when you can no longer work? Where will you live? Who will care for you?
Investments, pensions, savings, and insurance are all practical responses to this topic. It is not sufficient to have just one. Diversify. If you do not already have a pension plan, start one now, no matter how late it feels. If you have merely been saving, consider making investments that will outperform inflation. Think beyond money and invest in relationships. Your network, family, and community will be important as you get older, because loneliness may be just as damaging as a lack of money.
Many Nigerians overseas make the mistake of focussing just on the present. The never-ending cycle of bills, remittances, and short-term necessities might make it difficult to notice how quickly time passes. But take a moment to think. Even if you are 50 or 60, with the right planning, you still have 20 to 30 years to live. That is a long time to either struggle or to enjoy peace, depending on how you plan now.
