Your ability to communicate effectively can make or break your progress abroad. Knowledge, abilities, and ambition alone are not enough; if you cannot convey them clearly, you will be overlooked. Communication is the connection between what you know and how others perceive it. Too many Nigerians underestimate this, citing accents or timidity.
Strong communication opens up opportunities in interviews, workplaces, and communities. Employers respect individuals who can explain ideas, collaborate with others, and effectively represent their organisations. Poor communication, on the other hand, keeps you in the background, no matter how capable you are. Abroad, where competition is fierce, those who speak clearly and firmly outperform those who remain silent.
Investing in communication skills requires deliberate practice. It could be through classes, public speaking groups, or even online platforms. Learn how to organise your ideas, control your tone, and captivate your audience. Pay attention to body language because communication is more than just words—it's about presence. Practise until you can speak under pressure, whether in an interview, a meeting, or a casual networking event. If you require articulating bullet points before presentation, please do so.
Don't let your fear of accents or blunders keep you back. Many successful immigrants talk with accents, yet they succeed because they prioritise clarity. People value confidence, not perfection. If you wait until you sound "British enough," you might never speak. Start with what you have, improve as you go, and let your message carry more weight than your accent.
At the end of the day, communication is power. It determines how people see you, how they respond to you, and how far you can go. If you want influence, progress, and impact abroad, communication is very important. Invest in it, practice it, and let it set you apart.
