129. COULD JAPA ENSLAVE YOU? Japa is frequently painted as an escape from suffering, but for some, it has become a new type of enslavement. The fallacy is that once in the UK, life becomes easier. The reality is that you may trade the pressure of Nigeria for the hamster wheel of endless expenses and back-to-back shifts. If you don’t carefully organise your life overseas, you may discover that Japa has not released you, but rather shackled you in a new way.
The UK system is based on bills. Rent, council tax, utilities, transport and other expenses will consume a significant portion of your monthly income. If you don’t handle your finances properly, you’ll be continually chasing shifts in order to break even. Some Nigerians work day and night, unable to rest or build beyond survival.

Debt is another method in which Japa enslaves people. Many people rush into credit cards, phone contracts, and car financing without considering the long-term implications. Before you realise it, your pay cheque belongs to lenders, and you have little control. This causes mental anguish and leaves you feeling confined. Japa might lead to a cycle in which you labour just to pay off debts and liabilities.

There is also the subtle form of servitude that comes with losing individuality. Some Nigerians bend so far to fit into the British system that they lose their essence. They avoid their culture, networks, and even their aspirations at home. They become slaves to appearances—chasing validation, designer labels, and Instagram-worthy lifestyles, while their true dreams die slowly. That kind of life may look shiny outside but feels empty inside.
