In many ways, sure. Immigrants, particularly those from Africa, may experience additional pressure to establish themselves in workplaces, where they are perceived as outsiders. While an indigene may be granted the benefit of the doubt, an immigrant must continuously demonstrate competence, dependability, and dedication. The weight is heavier, but the benefits might be greater if you channel your effort wisely.

Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration

Immigrants labour harder for survival, not necessarily out of racism. Many of us have families back home that rely on us, bills to pay, and goals to pursue. Unlike some locals who work primarily for themselves, we frequently operate with long-term goals in mind. That added strain motivates us to work more, take on more shifts, or pursue several jobs. The reality is that the immigrant cannot afford to be average. To survive in a foreign land, you must often push yourself beyond comfort.

However, this double effort has its dangers. Constantly working twice as hard can lead to burnout, health issues, and broken relationships. Many Nigerians abroad pride themselves on their work ethic, but neglect rest, balance, and self-care. This is not sustainable. You cannot build a successful life in the diaspora if you sacrifice your health and peace. Hard labour is essential, but wisdom is much more valuable. Work hard, but also smartly—learn to bargain, upskill, and position yourself for jobs where your efforts are adequately compensated.

It's also worth mentioning that not all immigrants are locked in the "work twice as hard" loop. Those that invest in education, networking, and skill development eventually advance to places where they not only survive, but thrive. At this stage, the playing field starts to level. However, until you reach that point, you will frequently feel compelled to offer more, to demonstrate your worth. This is the reality of being an immigrant in a competitive society.
