Many Nigerians who relocate here are captivated by how the government helps those who are unemployed, sick, or struggling. And it is unquestionably one of the system's strengths. Welfare is intended to ensure that nobody goes hungry or homeless. However, many of us misunderstand its purpose. Welfare benefits are intended to provide a safety net rather than a way of life. They are intended to assist you in regaining stability, rather than to permanently anchor your life.

When you rely too heavily on welfare, you unintentionally restrict your growth. The system assists, but it also monitors. Every cent you get, comes with conditions. If you earn more, the welfare benefit decreases. If you lie about your status, it will backfire. And if you stay too long on it without progress, it affects your credit record and opportunities. The system rewards movement, not stagnation. So, if you ever find yourself on welfare, take it as a temporary measure.

Many people in the diaspora struggle with the urge to abuse the system. Some people fabricate information, under-report income, or claim benefits they are not entitled to. It may appear to be wise, but it is actually short-sighted. The UK system may be slow, but it is thorough. Investigations can occur years later, with serious implications. Beyond that, there is moral weight. When you take what you do not deserve, you deprive yourself of dignity.

Receiving assistance is not a sign of weakness. Everyone needs help at some point. Take pride in your progress. Plan your exit. Work on regaining your independence. When you eventually do, share your story to inspire others to rise. Teach them how to seek help ethically, not manipulatively.

Thank you very much to all our readers. You are much appreciated.
