Living abroad exposes you to systems that frequently outperform those you were familiar with at home. In the UK, systems are in place to provide people with healthcare, housing, welfare benefits, and opportunities. But here is the challenge: will you use the system as intended, or will you abuse it? Too many Nigerians in the diaspora jeopardise their future by attempting to "game" the system, failing to realise that shortcuts have long-term repercussions.

Abusing the system may appear to be tiny lies, such as claiming benefits for which you do not qualify, avoiding taxes, forging documents, or exploiting loopholes. Some individuals believe it is wise. But the truth is that the system is wiser. Every abuse creates a trail. One wrong signature, one false claim, one illegal move, can follow you for years and ruin opportunities you never imagined. What feels like a little gain today can cost you citizenship, employment, or even freedom tomorrow.

The diaspora is about building credibility. Employers, schools, and governments rely on your honesty. Every time you cheat the system, you lose trust. And when you lose trust, doors close. Nigerians abroad already face stereotypes of being fraudulent. Each time one person abuses the system, it reinforces negative labels for all of us. Instead of lifting our image, it drags it further into the mud.

Using the system correctly, however, creates stability. The UK has structures, designed to help you grow. From legitimate benefits when you are struggling, to opportunities for retraining, to schemes for housing and pensions—you can use them without lying. Build within the rules. Pay your taxes. Keep your records clean. In the long run, integrity pays more than manipulation.
