When you go abroad, it's natural to become preoccupied with money. After all, one pound seems like a lot, when converted to naira. Many Nigerians hurry into employment solely for the money, with no regard for career advancement, health consequences, or personal satisfaction. But here's the truth: while money is important, it isn't everything. A job that pays well but exhausts your mind and body is a gradual trap. You'll spend your money fixing the damage it did.

Your first job abroad may be anything - cleaning, caregiving, warehouse, or driving. That's fine; it's part of the adventure. But don't stay there if it doesn't fit into your long-term strategy. Use each season wisely. Learn, save, and move. Many Nigerians get comfortable with “fast money” and forget that progress is not about how much you earn, but how well your work serves your future. Always ask: is this job helping me grow or just paying my bills?

Also, don’t chase jobs only because others are doing them. Every person’s path is unique. Just because your friend is earning well in healthcare doesn’t mean you should force yourself into it if you have no passion for it. Explore your interests, research other sectors, and find where your strength fits best. The UK offers endless options — from tech to logistics, finance to education. If you only see money, you’ll miss opportunity.

And then, there’s mental health. Many Nigerians abroad work long hours — sometimes three jobs — with no rest. They call it “hustle,” but it’s actually burnout in disguise. You can’t build a stable life if you’re constantly exhausted. Choose jobs that allow you to rest, learn, and live. Money should work for you, not drain you. Over time, your peace of mind will prove more valuable than your payslip.
