One of the most expensive expenses for Nigerians in the diaspora is sending their children to university. The dream is straightforward: give them the finest. However, when the bills arrive, the reality sets in. Tuition, housing, books, and living expenses can quickly deplete resources. Without proper planning, you risk being indebted or unable to completely support your child. The solution? Planning and strategy.

Start early. Do not wait until your child is 17, to consider university. Junior ISAs, kid trust funds, and savings plans are among the schemes available in the UK to assist parents in their planning. Even tiny monthly savings might add up over time. Too many parents disregard these, believing they'll "figure it out later," only to become panicked when the moment arrives. Discipline today saves stress tomorrow.

Encourage your children to be proactive too. University is their education, not just your responsibility. Teach them about scholarships, student loans, and part-time work. Many Nigerian parents carry the burden alone, but involving your child teaches responsibility and prepares them for adulthood. When children contribute in small ways, they value education more and waste less.

Also, broaden your vision. University isn't the only way to succeed. Apprenticeships, vocational training, and business paths may benefit some youngsters more than others. Do not force your child to pursue expensive degrees that do not match their strengths. The goal is not only to pay for their education, but also to put them on a road where their talents and passions will lead to greater possibilities.
