The driving test is one of the most humiliating experiences for many Nigerians in the United Kingdom. You can have decades of driving experience back home, but the UK system will still require you to start from scratch. For many of us, that seems like an unnecessary mountain. But let's be honest: the United Kingdom does not function on connections or "man-know-man." It is based on method; and once you understand it, you will love it.

When preparing for the driving test, the most common mistake is underestimating it. Their thoughts are: "I've been driving since my university days; how hard can it be?" That mentality alone has led to several failures. The UK test is about awareness, not speed. It’s about observation, not aggression. Back home, we learn to survive traffic; here, you learn to respect rules. So, start by studying the Highway Code seriously. Learn the road signs, practice hazard perception online, and book lessons with a qualified instructor. Don’t rush to take the test because of pride or cost; it’s better to prepare well and pass once than to fail three times and spend more.

Another thing you must know is that the driving test experience itself can be intimidating. The examiner doesn’t smile much, the car feels strange, and your heart beats faster than usual. But remember, they’re not out to fail you. They’re simply checking if you’re safe enough to be on the road. Many Nigerians struggle with nerves, not skill. So, on the day of your test, approach it calmly. Breathe, focus, and treat it as a normal drive. If you make a minor mistake, don’t panic. Keep going. Confidence and composure go a long way.

Owning a UK driving license does more than allow you to drive. It gives you freedom. You can work in more places, move easily, and even lower your insurance rates over time. It also becomes a valid form of identification, which simplifies many processes.

The United Kingdom driving test comprises of theory and practical tests. And you need to have a provisional licence before graduating to a full diving licence.
