For many Nigerians in the UK, the true measure of our maturity is not how much we earn, but how well we spend. The truth is that living overseas provides a unique form of independence, in which you control your income, choices, and time. However, freedom comes with responsibilities. In the United Kingdom, it is easy to become self-centred because bills never cease. Even within that, you can choose to live thoughtfully rather than selfishly. How you spend, affects not only your comfort, but also your personality.

Being selfless does not imply being thoughtless. It does not imply sending money home to everyone who begs, or donating till you are broke. It includes understanding the purpose of money. Some people believe that financial maturity means owning savings or assets. It's not only that; it's about having direction. When you arrange your expenditures, you recognise that every pound you earn serves a purpose. Some of it must suit your requirements, some must advance your future, and some must benefit others.

One of the mistakes that some Nigerians overseas make, is to disregard their communities. They live only for themselves. However, no one actually thrives in isolation. People who think outside of their comfort zones have a long-term impact on the world. They give to their mosque, contribute to charities, support community projects, or mentor others. Giving, doesn’t have to be huge; sometimes it’s just your time, attention, or advice.

However, balance is key. Some of us give so much that we forget to build for ourselves. You can’t pour from an empty cup. If you don’t manage your finances wisely, even your generosity will dry up. So, learn to set boundaries. It’s okay to say no, when requests threaten your stability. Selflessness without wisdom becomes self-destruction. Your first responsibility is to be a good steward of what God gives you. And good stewardship includes saving, investing, and spending responsibly. Selfless spending should come from overflow, not guilt.
