268. WOULD YOU RATHER BEG THAN EARN? One thing is apparent in the UK and throughout the diaspora: dignity is earned. Nonetheless, some Nigerians fall into the trap of entitlement or dependence. Instead of working, they rely on government assistance, relatives, or friends. There is no pride in always stretching out your hands, especially when you have the potential to work and add value.
Work is valued in international cultures. Dignity exists, whether you are cleaning, driving, or working in an office. What matters is not where you start, but what you build on from there. Too many people waste years looking for the right job, while living on what others offer them. Begging becomes a habit, and confidence evaporates. Earning money, no matter how tiny, makes you stand taller. You command respect because you are aware of your contributions.

There is also a financial truth: you cannot accumulate wealth by begging. Handouts may keep you going for a time, but they will never turn into assets or investments. When you make money, you may save, plan ahead, and multiply your resources. The individual who works today, has possibilities for tomorrow. The one who begs today is sure to ask again tomorrow. It is a cycle that you must decide to break.
Begging also reduces opportunities. People respect you when they see how hard you work. Employers are more likely to recommend or promote you when you demonstrate consistency. Even friends and relatives are more willing to support, when they know you are working hard to stand on your feet. But the one who only takes, soon becomes a burden. Relationships strain when people feel used. Don’t let that be your story in the diaspora.
