Starting a business as a Nigerian in the UK isn't as difficult as many people believe. The system does, in fact, support entrepreneurs if you know where to seek. The problem is that many of us don't use existing services because we believe they aren't for us. The truth is, the UK government and various non-profit organisations provide grants, low-interest loans, mentorship, and even free training to small business entrepreneurs. There are numerous opportunities available, including The King's Trust for persons under 30, Start Up Loans UK, and local entrepreneurial hubs.

One key thing you must do as a Nigerian entrepreneur in the diaspora is to structure your business properly. Register it, open a business account, and keep proper records. The UK rewards order, not hustle. It’s not about who works hardest; it’s about who works smart and legally. Once your business is formalised, you qualify for funding, tax reliefs, and business advice. You can even access mentorship programs tailored to Black and ethnic minority founders. Don’t shy away from these programs because you think they’re only for locals.

Networking is another powerful form of entrepreneurial support. Attend business meet-ups, join diaspora business associations, and connect with like-minded Nigerians. There’s strength in community. When you share ideas, opportunities open up. One introduction can change your business forever. I’ve seen small start-ups grow just because someone mentioned them in the right room. But to benefit from that kind of exposure, you must show up. Don’t isolate yourself. Success in the diaspora requires connection.

Also, don’t underestimate the value of digital tools. The UK is highly digital, and online businesses thrive here. From e-commerce to consulting, social media marketing to coaching, there’s room for everyone. The government even offers free or subsidised digital training, to help small businesses thrive. As a Nigerian, your creativity and resilience are your biggest capital. Combine that with available support, and you can create something powerful.

Thank you very much to all our readers. You are much appreciated.
