Insurance is one of those things that many Nigerians overseas dismiss as a needless expense—until disaster strikes. In Nigeria, insurance is frequently overlooked because individuals do not trust the system. In the UK, however, insurance is more than a safety net; it is a lifeline. It can mean the difference between recovering swiftly and going into debt.
Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration
Think about your health. In the UK, the NHS provides basic healthcare, but there are times when additional coverage makes life easier. Private health insurance, for example, can give you speedier access to specialists. In contrast, life insurance assures that your family is not left adrift if something happens to you. Many Nigerians shy away from these policies, but the truth is that one unexpected crisis can wipe out years of hard work. Insurance steps in where savings cannot stretch.
Consider also property and income. What happens if your rented home is damaged in a fire? What if your car accident leads to huge bills? What if illness prevents you from working for months? These are not unrealistic scenarios—they happen every day. Without insurance, you are left exposed, and the cost of recovery can cripple you. With insurance, you transfer that risk to a system designed to carry it for you. It is not about expecting the worst, but about preparing wisely for it.
The immigrant path is full of uncertainties, and the stress of starting life abroad is already high. Insurance offers peace of mind. You sleep easier knowing you have a cushion in case something happens. It may feel like a monthly burden, but it is less expensive to pay in tiny amounts now, than to confront a pile of debt later. The wise ones in the diaspora are not those who eschew insurance in order to "save money," but rather those who use it to protect their future.
