One of the most common mistakes Nigerians make when deciding to 'Japa' is believing that leaving Nigeria entails cutting connections with everything and everyone they've ever known. In their eagerness to start over, some people delete contacts, ghost former pals, or treat those back home as if they've become obsolete. But here's the truth: your relationships back home aren't just dead weight; they're your roots. And roots continue to be valuable even after the tree has migrated to healthier soil.

Breaking up relationships can make your new life lonelier than you expected. No matter how modern the UK appears, Nigerians' sense of community is invaluable. You will immediately notice that overseas, you'll seek familiar voices, shared jokes, and folks who understand your story. The bridge between your old world and your new one will help you stay balanced. Even professionally, people you once knew back home could become partners in business, collaborators on projects, or your next big referral.

The temptation to start afresh is understandable. Many people Japa because they’re tired of the system, the struggles, the disappointments. But cutting off everyone who reminds you of home doesn’t erase your past; it simply disconnects you from your heritage and support system. Growth doesn’t require you to discard relationships; it only asks you to redefine them.

Here’s something to remember: bridges don’t always have to be emotional. They can be practical too. Stay in touch with old mentors, reliable artisans, trusted family members, and even your local community group. When you eventually begin to settle in the UK, you might find that the bridge you maintained helps others cross too.

And by burning bridges, their need may come at the most unexpected time.
