When you relocate abroad, one of the simplest ways to advance, both personally and professionally, is by networking. However, many Nigerians are wary of it, because they believe it is "forming" or fraudulent. That thinking has to shift. Networking connects you to where you want to be. In a country like the United Kingdom, where opportunities frequently circulate through relationships, your success is determined not just by your abilities but also by your social standing.

In Nigeria, we grow up hearing, "Just work hard, and God will bless you." However, when you travel abroad, you will immediately realise that, in addition to hard effort, visibility is equally important. People can only suggest you, if they recognise you. That’s why attending community events, business meet-ups, or professional seminars is not a waste of time. It’s an investment in your future. Each new person you meet could be your next mentor, employer, collaborator, or client. And in a place where Nigerians often feel invisible, showing up consistently keeps you relevant.

The beauty of networking in the UK is diversity. You’ll meet people from every background, career, and generation. Don’t limit yourself to only Nigerian circles. While it’s good to connect with your community, don’t isolate yourself within it. Attend cross-cultural events — you’ll learn how to communicate better, understand new systems, and gain exposure to opportunities that may never circulate within just the African network. Think of it as cross-pollination; growth happens when ideas mix.

However, networking requires authenticity. Don’t go just to collect business cards or chase favours. Build real relationships. Be genuinely curious about people’s work, offer value where you can, and follow up respectfully. A simple “It was great meeting you” message can keep doors open. Many people miss out on opportunities, because they only network when they need something. The best time to build relationships is when you don’t need them yet.
