Many Nigerians consider looking smart to be part of their culture. We enjoy looking good, lively, and unique. However, clothing requirements in the UK workplace frequently reflect a different culture—more discreet, professional, and subdued. Understanding these hidden standards can mean the difference between fitting in and striking out in the wrong manner. Workplace dress requirements are not intended to kill your style; rather, they are intended to convey the appropriate message.

The first thing to remember is that your clothes communicate before you do. In professional settings, your attire determines how others perceive your ability, confidence, and seriousness. You may be extremely talented, but if you arrive disorganised or overdressed for the occasion, others may treat you poorly. That is why it is important to learn the dress culture of your workplace. Some offices are strictly corporate, others are business-casual, and some industries are even relaxed. Observe, adapt, and align.
Nigerians often struggle with overdressing in the UK workplace. What looks “sharp” to us can sometimes look “excessive” here. Flashy suits, heavy jewellery, or overly bright colours may send the wrong signals. This doesn’t mean you should hide your identity or stop being stylish—it means learning balance. Simplicity, neatness, and appropriateness are the key. Save your full agbada or flamboyant outfits for cultural events, not Monday meetings. Let your clothes support your message, not distract it.

Another mistake is to ignore grooming. Clothing is vital, but so is neatness—hair, nails, shoes, and overall appearance. A basic shirt and clean shoes might make a bigger impression than an expensive suit worn carelessly. In the UK, "looking professional" is more about being neat, coordinated, and acceptable than it is about being dazzling. This is a cultural shift that many newcomers must learn to accept.
