One of the subtle shocks that many Nigerians confront when travelling overseas is the importance of documents. Everything in the United Kingdom is recorded, traceable, and validated; from birth to marriage to death. The system is based on accuracy. However, for those of us raised in places where "oral record" is typical, this may seem unneeded or bureaucratic. Still, you'll quickly realise that appropriate documentation is more than simply a regulatory need; it's your safety.

Let us start with marriages. In Nigeria, many couples choose traditional or religious weddings over formal registration. However, in the United Kingdom, marriage must be registered with the state before it is legally recognised. This affects your taxes, inheritance rights, immigration procedures, and potentially your children's futures. Without it, your spouse is technically not recognised by law. If you relocated as a couple, make sure your marriage certificate is valid and recognised internationally. If it’s not, re-register it locally. A simple oversight can cause years of headache later.

For births, the rule is the same. Every child born in the UK must be registered within a specific timeframe, usually within 42 days. The birth certificate becomes the child’s first official proof of existence. It affects schooling, healthcare, travel, and even citizenship status. Nigerian parents must understand that their child’s Nigerian identity doesn’t replace the need for UK documentation. Keep both worlds balanced. Get the UK birth certificate, and if you want, follow up with Nigerian embassy registration for dual citizenship. It’s not about formality; it’s about giving your child legal roots in both countries.

Then there's death, an uncomfortable but important topic. Many Nigerians avoid discussing it, but preparing creates peace. When a loved one dies overseas, there are procedures for reporting the death, registering it, and arranging repatriation if desired. Without proper registration, closing becomes more difficult, and estate administration becomes chaotic. If you have older relatives or perhaps your own family living overseas, ensure that everyone knows the procedure. Keep important documents such as passports, wills, NHS numbers, and insurance policies handy. It is love in its most practical form.
