Every year, many Nigerians dream of fleeing the nation for greener pastures. The word "Japa" has become a catchphrase for escaping hardship. But before you join the herd, take a moment to question yourself honestly: is Japa the best option? Not everyone who leaves Nigeria discovers the utopia they seek overseas.
First, ask yourself why you want to Japa. If it's just because everyone else is leaving, you could be making a mistake. Migration is difficult. The UK, like any other country, does not have an endless supply of free money. You will experience cultural shocks, financial difficulties, and the stress of beginning from scratch. If your only reason is to escape hardship without a plan, you may find yourself facing even greater hardship abroad. Intentionality is key.

Second, what skills or qualifications do you have? The truth is, the UK values skills, not just ambition. If you migrate without equipping yourself, you may end up trapped in low-income jobs that drain your energy but do not advance your career or finances. On the other hand, if you plan well, build skills that are in demand, and prepare for the realities of the system, Japa could indeed open doors. Your preparation determines whether migration will be a blessing or a burden.
Third, consider your responsibilities. Do you have family members depending on you? Do you have the emotional strength to be away from home? Can you cope with isolation, cultural differences, and the grind of building from scratch? Too many Nigerians migrate without counting the cost, only to return defeated or live in quiet frustration abroad. Japa is not for the faint-hearted—it is for those who plan, prepare, and persevere.
Empowering And Inspiring Generations
Before you Japa, think about if it’s your only or best option. Explore the pros and cons of your different options. Research and consult before making a decision. Pray intentionally. And then execute your decision, with hope and conviction.
