Life abroad has a weird way of testing your concentration. You apply for jobs and get rejected. You try to rent a flat and are turned down. You put effort into a relationship or undertaking, then it quickly ends. In situations like this, it's simple to concentrate on the closed doors. However, closed doors are a normal aspect of any journey. They are not evidence of failure, but of redirection.
Many Nigerians in the UK squander emotional energy lamenting about prospects that did not work out - a visa that was delayed, a job that went to someone else, or a friend who abandoned them. But occasionally those disappointments serve as heavenly protection. The UK system, for example, runs on timing and paperwork. One missed opportunity could be paving way for a better one you didn’t see. But if you spend all your time looking backward, you miss what’s ahead.
Focusing on open doors doesn’t mean pretending you’re not hurt. It means acknowledging your disappointment but choosing not to dwell there. You learn, dust yourself up and move forward. Sometimes the new door looks smaller or unfamiliar, but inside it lies your next level. Many people discovered their purpose only after losing a job or relationship they thought they couldn’t live without. Don’t fear redirection; embrace it. Closed doors teach you to trust timing. Open doors reward your persistence.
In a country like the UK, where competition is high and progress can feel slow, resilience is everything. You can’t afford to be stuck in bitterness. Let every setback fuel your focus. Ask yourself: “What is this teaching me? Where else can I apply my energy?”
And don’t forget the saying, that: “when one door closes, another slowly opens.” Some people, don’t see the opening doors; are you one of them?
