One of the realities that Nigerians face when they come to the UK is the price gap. At first glance, everything appears to be more expensive abroad, but the real truth is revealed when cost is compared to earning ability. Items in Nigeria may appear cheaper in naira, but incomes are frequently insufficient to afford them comfortably. Prices in the UK may be higher, but wages are designed to support them.

Take food as an example. In Nigeria, a simple shopping run might consume a significant portion of your monthly salary, especially given inflation and currency volatility. Basic food items in the UK are more expensive in absolute terms, but they are still quite reasonable in relation to earnings. You can walk into a supermarket and pick groceries for a week without feeling crushed. That is why many immigrants notice that while they may not eat as lavishly as back home, they rarely starve in the UK.

Housing, however, is a different story. Rent in the UK, particularly in cities like London, can be painfully high. A single room can take a third of your monthly income if you are not careful. In Nigeria, housing might also be expensive, but the system often allows yearly rent, extended family support or informal arrangements. In the UK, housing swallows income fast and leaves little room for savings if not well managed. This is why budgeting becomes an immigrant’s survival skill.

Then comes the matter of services. In Nigeria, employing domestic help, drivers or artisans is relatively cheap because labour is abundant and wages are low. In the UK, the same services are seen as luxuries. You pay premium rates for cleaners, babysitters, or handymen. That is why many immigrants who were used to help back home suddenly become do-it-yourself experts. The trade-off is that while you may have to handle tasks yourself, you also gain dignity in labour and appreciation for self-reliance.

The big lesson is this: prices must always be weighed against earnings and lifestyle. Don’t compare naira directly to pounds, or you will always feel cheated. Instead, ask yourself—what percentage of my income does this expense take? You may realise that while the UK seems expensive, it often gives you more value for your effort. Understand the balance, adjust your mindset and use that knowledge to plan your finances wisely.

But, before you go, a basic Afro haircut in London is about £15-£35 whereas in Lagos it could be about 1,000 to 4,000 Naira.
