273. WHERE WOULD YOU LOVE YOUR REMAINS TO BE BURIED? It may sound grim, but every immigrant eventually faces the dilemma of where they will be buried. In Nigeria, where your ancestors rest, or in the UK, where you have established a life? This question concerns not only your location, but also your identity, legacy, and how you wish to be remembered. Many Nigerians abroad avoid it, yet ignoring it does not change the facts.
Burial choices typically show how you perceive yourself. For some people, Nigeria means home. Regardless of how many decades they have been abroad, they still envisage their final resting place in their village, beside family and ancestry. It's about roots and tradition. For others, the UK feels like home.
But clarity necessitates preparation. Too many families suffer when loved ones die overseas because no decision was taken. Relatives disagree on whether to ship the body or bury it locally. Costs are high, tension rises, and families split. However, with careful planning—writing a will, purchasing burial insurance, and clarification , by declaring wishes—you can save your family considerable stress.
This conversation also prompts us to reflect: are you leading a life worth remembering? Burial is about legacy. Whether in Nigeria or elsewhere, what matters is the influence you leave behind. The true question is not "where will you be buried," but rather "what story will be told at your burial?" Will people remember you as one who gave, built, and inspired, or one who merely existed?
