One of the hidden challenges of Japa is loneliness. Back home, you are surrounded by family, friends, neighbours, and a lively community. Abroad, the silence can be deafening. Work-home-work can trap you in isolation if you’re not intentional. That is why socialising is not a luxury—it is survival. You need human connections to stay balanced, grow, and thrive in the UK. Socialising is not about throwing parties every weekend; it is about building meaningful connections that nourish your life.

The first step is breaking out of your shell. Many Nigerians arrive and stick only with their community. While this gives comfort, it can also limit you. Broaden your circles. Join local groups, attend the mosque, church or community events, volunteer, or sign up for classes. There are numerous clubs in the United Kingdom, ranging from sports to reading, fitness, and even gardening. These are opportunities to meet new people, form networks, and feel less alone. Don't wait for friendship to come knocking; put yourself out there.
Socialisation is also about integration. The more you interact with people, the faster you will comprehend the culture. You'll discover minor details that no textbook or YouTube video can teach you. For example, you'll discover how individuals’ joke, celebrate, and exhibit generosity. These insights help you feel less like an outsider. And when you begin to feel at ease, your confidence in all other aspects of life grows.

At the same time, remember balance. Don’t lose yourself trying to fit in. Carry your Nigerian identity with pride. Share your food, your music, your stories. People are curious, and many appreciate cultural exchange. Socialising is not about becoming someone else—it is about adding your flavour to the mix. The Nigerian community abroad is strong, but don’t hide only in that comfort zone. Use it as a base while also expanding your reach.
