Soap operas, also known as TV shows, are a popular form of entertainment among Nigerians living abroad. After long shifts and stressful days, settling down to binge-watch can be therapeutic. But here's the truth: soap operas are more than simply entertainment; they can silently alter your thinking, habits, and even your morals, if you don't pay attention. The mind does not divide fiction from reality as neatly as we believe.
There is nothing wrong with watching television for leisure, but the trouble arises when you devote more time to fictional characters than to your own life goals. Some folks know every soap opera storyline yet have no financial plan. Some can stay up all night watching, but cannot sit down for one hour to learn a skill or read a book. It becomes an escape from reality, not a balance for it. If you want success in the diaspora, you must learn to control how much entertainment consumes your time.

Soap operas also shape culture. Many foreign soaps normalise values that are not ours. From how relationships are handled, to how children talk back to parents, to how people view money, these messages are constantly being fed into your subconscious. Over time, they may influence how you raise your children, how you treat your spouse, and how you approach life. Culture is subtle. You may not even realise you are shifting, until you look back and see how far you’ve drifted.

But soap operas can also be positive. They expose you to language, creativity, and sometimes even real issues like injustice, poverty, or ambition. The question is: are you watching with awareness? Do you separate entertainment from reality? Do you limit the time you spend so that it doesn’t eat into more important parts of your life? Soap operas should relax you, not control you.
