Living abroad is unpredictable. Everything appears to be in order — regular income, planned bills, consistent routines — until someone loses their job unexpectedly. It could happen to anyone. In truth, it frequently occurs discreetly, as many individuals in the UK carry their troubles privately. If a friend, coworker, or associate loses their job, how you respond is important. How you handle them during that difficult time displays your actual character. It's easy to celebrate others' victories; the true test is how you handle their disappointments.
First, demonstrate empathy, not pity. Losing a job abroad has a distinct impact because bills do not wait, and social safety nets can be complicated for foreigners. A person's self-esteem may already be disturbed, so avoid passing judgement or offering unwanted advice. Sometimes they don’t need “You should have done this” — they just need “I understand, you’ll get through this.” A listening ear and emotional support can go farther than any motivational speech.
Secondly, if you’re in a position to help practically, do it wisely. Maybe share job leads, help them update their CV, or recommend them for short-term gigs. Sometimes, a few weeks of stable income can stop a spiral. But don’t make their struggle a topic of gossip. Privacy is dignity. When people trust you during their low moments, honour that trust. In a foreign country, reputation spreads fast — your kindness or cruelty will both echo. Choose wisely.
Also, remind them that job loss is not identity loss. Many Nigerians tie their worth to productivity — as if not working, means failure. But rest, reflection, and redirection can be part of God’s plan too. Encourage them to see it as an opportunity to re-evaluate their path. Some of the most successful diasporas rebuilt from a layoff. The pause became their pivot. A closed door abroad can sometimes be divine redirection toward better work or even entrepreneurship.
And remember the saying, that “when one door closes, another opens.”
