In Nigeria, we frequently associate talking with intelligence and quiet with weakness. However, living in the United Kingdom teaches you quickly that wisdom is measured by how well you comprehend rather than how much you talk. Here, systems thrive on clarity rather than cacophony. You don't get things done by talking over people; instead, you listen carefully, grasp instructions, and implement them correctly. Talking is simple; listening needs humility.

Many Nigerians living abroad suffer with communication, not because they lack intelligence, but because they fail to properly listen. Whether at work, in class, or in relationships, we are frequently so eager to defend ourselves that we miss the point. Listening does not imply agreement; rather, it involves allowing the other person an opportunity to be understood. When you master that, you begin to see progress in areas that previously felt stuck. For example, at work, your manager may not be attacking you when they correct you; they might simply be helping you improve. But if you’re too defensive, you miss the wisdom in their feedback.

Listening also expands your intelligence. Every time you listen, you gain access to perspectives you may not have considered. That’s how learning works. Talking keeps you in your own bubble; listening opens new doors. In the UK, where cultural diversity is high, active listening helps you navigate communication differences. You learn to pick up on tone, nuance, and context.

Of course, listening doesn’t mean losing your voice. It means choosing when to speak and when to stay silent. Silence can be powerful — especially in professional or sensitive settings. It shows maturity. People remember good listeners because they make others feel heard. And in a world full of noise, that’s a rare gift. Listening also sharpens your spirit.
