Living in the UK can be humbling, even for the most confident individual. You could have held a high position in Nigeria, but once here, you have to start from scratch – cleaner, caretaker, warehouse worker, security guard. Many people lose trust in the process. They start to associate their work title with their value. But let me tell you something: your worth does not depend on your work. Your worth is based on who you are, rather than what you do. Until you perceive yourself in that light, you will continue to undervalue yourself.
Knowing your worth begins with understanding your identity. If you define yourself solely by what society gives you, you will always feel little. However, understanding your inner value; your talents, experience, wisdom, and resilience, help you stop begging for validation. For many of us Nigerians abroad, the transition from a respect-filled culture to a more individualistic one, can make us shrink. Back home, we’re called “Oga” or “Madam.” Here, everyone calls you by your first name. It can feel disrespectful at first, but it’s not. It’s cultural.
That said, knowing your worth doesn’t mean acting proud or entitled. It means understanding what you bring to the table and demanding fairness. In the workplace, it means asking for proper pay when you’ve earned it. In business, it means charging confidently for your services. In relationships, it means refusing to let people take advantage of you. Too many people abroad work hard but still let others undervalue them because they fear losing jobs or clients.
One way to rediscover your worth is to invest in yourself. Learn new skills. Attend courses. Update your CV. Upgrade your thinking. Knowledge increases confidence. You can’t know your worth if you’re not growing. The UK offers countless opportunities for personal and professional development — many of them are free or subsidised. Take advantage of them. The more competent you become, the more valuable you feel. And when you know your value, you carry yourself differently.
