Success in the diaspora can be a lonely journey if pursued alone. Many Nigerians work hard, overcome obstacles, and earn great experience—but then keep it to themselves. However, the journey becomes more significant when you share what you've learnt. Mentorship is not about being perfect; rather, it is about guiding others to avoid making the same mistakes you did.

Jack’s Mentoring 101

Mentorship is important because knowledge grows when it is shared. If you relate your difficulties in settling into the UK—the paperwork, the cultural differences, the job market—you may be able to help someone else. Too many people make unnecessary mistakes because no one takes the time to guide them. Imagine how much stronger our community would be if every Nigerian in the diaspora mentored just one other person. It would create a chain of wisdom and strength that cannot be broken.

Mentoring also benefits you. When you teach, you sharpen your own understanding. When you guide others, you build networks of loyalty and respect. Mentorship is not about giving money—it is about giving time, advice, and perspective. Many doors open because someone spoke well of you, and often, that “someone” is a person you once mentored. Helping others succeed does not reduce your own success; it increases it.

Some Nigerians shy away from mentorship because they feel they are still struggling themselves. But mentorship does not require perfection. You do not need to have all the answers to guide someone who is a few steps behind you. Even if all you can share is “avoid this mistake I made,” that alone can save a person years of pain. Do not underestimate the value of your journey.

In the pursuit of mentoring, it shouldn’t be limited to Nigerians in diaspora. If there are willing and able others, who could genuinely benefit from your mentoring, go ahead and mentor them. A candle’s light doesn’t dim when it lights another.
