When you come in the UK, one of the first cultural shocks you might experience is the food. Gone are the days of boiling efo riro, pounded yam, and suya on every corner. Instead, you learn about fish and chips, baked beans, toast, shepherd's pie, and Sunday feasts. At first glance, it may appear bland or uninteresting, especially if you are accustomed to the spice and rhythm of Nigerian cuisine. But adjusting to UK staple foods does not require losing your heritage; rather, it means broadening your palate.
In the United Kingdom, staple foods commonly include potatoes, bread, pasta, fish, and meat. Breakfasts are often light (cereals, toast, or oatmeal), whereas lunches and dinners range from sandwiches to meat pies to roast dinners. For someone new, it’s easy to feel underfed or unsatisfied at first. You might even find yourself missing pepper soup and jollof rice so deeply that you start Googling “African stores near me.” And truthfully, that’s perfectly fine. The goal isn’t to replace your taste; it’s to learn balance.
One thing that will surprise you is how much variety you can find, if you know where to look. London, Birmingham, Manchester, and even smaller towns now have Afro-Caribbean stores stocked with everything from Garri to ogbono. Some even sell frozen okra, smoked fish, and real palm oil. There are also several Nigerian and African restaurants in the UK. So, you don’t have to lose your Nigerian kitchen entirely. The key is to mix local availability with global adaptability. Learn how to pair your stew with rice from Tesco or make plantain sandwiches with bread from Aldi. You’ll discover new tastes while preserving your culture.
Additionally, UK foods have their own nutritional benefits. While they may seem simple, they are generally high in vitamins and minerals, particularly veggies and fish-based meals. It is fairly uncommon for people to detect changes in their body weight or digestion patterns after relocating, thus it is prudent to combine traditional Nigerian spices with the UK's cooking practices.
