Living in the UK long enough, teaches you one simple truth: nothing here is genuinely free. Yes, the system provides assistance—healthcare, education, benefits, and housing—but it also requires accountability. It provides with one hand and silently receives with the other. Many newcomers cannot comprehend this equilibrium. They observe the advantages, the order, and the welfare system and believe the country is infinitely giving.

For example, when the government offers you benefits or subsidies, it is not a gift; it is part of an organised cycle designed to help you get back on your feet, not keep you there indefinitely. Many Nigerians in the UK have fallen into the trap of relying on these benefits for far too long, forgetting that every penny from the government comes with accountability. You’re expected to report changes in your income, housing, and employment honestly. If you don’t, the same system that helped you will penalise you. It’s not wickedness; it’s structure. That’s how they maintain order.

Another example is taxation. The UK tax system is both fair and firm. It ensures that the roads you drive on, the hospitals you visit, and the schools your children attend are maintained. But it also means that a chunk of your income isn’t truly yours. When people complain about the tax deductions, I always remind them: you’re paying for a system that works. You can’t have functioning public services without contribution. The key is to learn how to play smart within it. Understand tax codes, claim eligible deductions, and manage your finances wisely.

Housing is another area where this give-and-take system is apparent. Council housing may seem like a relief, but it also comes with restrictions. If your income rises, and you’re on welfare benefits, your rent contribution also rises. If you underreport your earnings, you risk investigation. It’s a cycle designed to push people towards independence. So, while it’s okay to accept help when you need it, it’s wiser to aim beyond it.

And finally, as your earnings increase, the system has a way of ‘tempting’ you into purchasing luxurious goods and services. Whereas the merchants may profit from such, the tax system equally gets a sizeable share of the returns, through direct and indirect taxation.

Thank you very much to all our readers. You are much appreciated.
