Redundancy can strike like lightning. One moment you're going to work, the next you're leaving with a sealed envelope containing your fate — and a cheque that appears to be both a blessing and a curse. Many Nigerians living abroad are tempted to worry after losing their jobs. You start thinking, "How am I going to pay my bills?" Should I send any of this money home? Should I go back for a few months to rest? But if you're not attentive, that lump sum will vanish faster than you can say "Japa."
The first step is to differentiate survival from strategy. Use what you need to keep afloat — rent, food, bills — but don't let those temporary expenses consume the entire payout.Think in percentages. For example, allocate about 30% for immediate survival, another 40% for income-generating ventures, and 30% for savings and retraining. And fit-in debt repayments and charitable giving as necessary. This balance keeps you grounded while positioning you for growth. Some Nigerians use redundancy money to start businesses without proper research, and before long, they lose both the business and the money. But if you approach it with clarity, that same amount could become the bridge between your old career and your next phase.
Another thing you must understand is that your mindset after redundancy determines your future. Many people start living in fear — they tighten their hands so much that they can’t invest. Others go to the other extreme and start spending carelessly, as if to prove that they’re still fine. Both attitudes are dangerous. See redundancy as a reset button, not a punishment. It’s life saying, “You’ve done your time here, now use your experience differently.”
Also, don’t be quick to send the money back home. It’s natural to want to help family or finish that house project in Nigeria, but be wise. Ask yourself if that money will multiply or vanish. Too many people have drained their savings into projects that yield no return, because of misplaced loyalty or emotional blackmail. If you want to invest back home, involve someone trustworthy or use structured platforms. Your first responsibility is to your financial stability abroad; you can’t help anyone if you’re stranded.
