Every Nigerian in the diaspora has a secret dream: that one day, our motherland would be a location of opportunity rather than a place where people flee. The truth is that Nigeria has an abundance of talent, resources, and innovation. Leadership lacks structure, integrity, and vision. Despite the issues, Nigeria is not hopeless.
Jack’s Empowerment and Inspiration
Mindset is the first step. Too many of us speak of Nigeria as if it were cursed, forgetting that no country became great by chance. The UK, America, and Canada were established by people who refused to give up their land. If we continue to perceive Nigeria solely as a destination to escape, we unintentionally exacerbate the very problems we complain about. But if we begin to shift our language and our actions, we can build pockets of opportunity, even in the middle of chaos.
Another step is investment in systems, not just consumption. Nigerians abroad often send money home for family needs, celebrations, or flashy projects. But what if we directed some of that energy into businesses that solve real problems? Agriculture, renewable energy, tech, and education are sectors that can transform lives if run with integrity. The diaspora has exposure to global best practices—we can transfer that knowledge home, not just money. By building small but reliable systems, we create ripples of opportunity for others.
The government has a role, no doubt, but change does not begin at the top. Communities, corporations, and individuals must accept accountability. Imagine if every Nigerian business was honest, gave value as promised, and treated consumers with respect. Opportunities would proliferate naturally. Corruption thrives because we all accept "man-know-man" shortcuts, but when honesty becomes our culture, we begin to lay the groundwork for true wealth. The diaspora, in particular, plays an important role in modelling this.
