Money is a difficult topic in any community, but especially among Nigerians living overseas. We have a cultural tendency of borrowing or demanding money from others, without considering the burden it places on them. Many people in the UK live pay cheque to pay cheque, even when they appear to be comfortable. So, when someone borrows and delays return, or makes demands that put a strain on another person's money, they are causing discomfort, not just annoyance.

It’s easy to assume that because someone lives abroad, they’re automatically “doing well.” That’s far from true. Many Nigerians here work long hours just to meet bills, taxes, and family responsibilities. So, when you borrow or request help, be mindful. Don’t put emotional pressure on others, with lines like “I know you have it” or “God will bless you.” Financial maturity means understanding that everyone has commitments you can’t see. And if someone helps you, honour that trust. Pay back when you said you would. Even if it’s small, communicate.

Also, avoid creating unnecessary dependence on others. Some people abroad make a habit of leaning on friends or community members, instead of budgeting properly. That’s not humility; that’s irresponsibility. Learn to manage what you have, even if it’s small. Cut your coat according to your cloth, not your desires. The UK rewards financial discipline. Live within your means. When you need help, ask respectfully and with a plan to repay. Don’t take advantage of kind people.

Also, if you need to ask at all, ensure that it’s for a worthwhile reason. It shouldn’t be for the purpose of showing-off; or for unproductive reasons.

On the flip side, if you’re the giver, also set boundaries. Don’t destroy your peace by trying to please everyone. It’s okay to say no when you can’t afford it. Help when you can, but not at the expense of your own financial stability. You’re not wicked for protecting your balance. Generosity without wisdom becomes chaos.
