265. IS THAT PITCH TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? Nigerians at home and abroad are continuously assaulted with opportunities—investment pitches, quick money scams, and business ventures that sound too good to pass up. But here's the truth: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Many hard-working immigrants lost their savings to fraud because greed or desperation clouded their judgement.
The first red flag is speed. Any pitch that forces you to invest immediately without giving you time to ponder is risky. Legitimate opportunities allow you to analyse, ask questions, and consult others. Scammers thrive on urgency because they know that if you hesitate, you might see through their lies. If someone says, "This deal will disappear tomorrow," run. Opportunities worth your money will still be there once you have done your due diligence.

The second red flag is a lack of transparency. If you cannot adequately describe how the business earns money, you should not invest your money in it. Many pitches utilise technical language to confuse you. Don't be dazzled by huge words, but by straightforward, simple explanations. If you don't understand something, don't touch it. Your hard-earned money deserves more than blind trust.
The third red flag is unrealistic returns. Promises of doubling your money in weeks, or guaranteed profits without risk, are traps. No genuine business can guarantee such results. Even banks, with their stability, offer modest returns. Wealth grows steadily, not magically. Scammers know that greed makes people suspend logic, so they bait you with impossible figures. Don’t fall for it. Remember, slow and steady always beats fast and fake.
The lesson is simple: protect yourself. Before you sign, send, or invest, do your research. Ask tough questions. Seek advice from professionals. And never let desperation drive your decisions.
