Living abroad might create a false impression of riches. You earn in pounds, the exchange rate appears favourable against the naira, and you suddenly feel wealthier than you are. However, the truth is that wealth is determined by your spending, savings, and long-term stability, not the cash you earn. Many Nigerians in the UK learn too late that they are poorer than they believe, because they confuse high salary with financial security.
Empowering And Inspiring Generations
The initial trap is lifestyle inflation. When the pounds begin to pile up, the desire to live "like you've arrived" grows stronger. Bigger car, bigger house, branded clothes, and countless subscriptions—before you realise it, your monthly expenses have consumed practically all of your income. You may still be sending money home and appearing successful on the outside, but in reality, your bank account is fragile. If you lose your job tomorrow, how many months can you survive? That is the real test of wealth, not how much you earn.

Debt is also an important consideration. Credit cards and loans are widely available in the UK, and many immigrants fall into the trap of spending tomorrow's money now. You may feel secure because you can make the minimum payments, but debt slowly destroys your future riches. A person earning £2,000 with no debt is often wealthier than someone earning £4,000 but owing £20,000. Genuine prosperity is measured in freedom, not appearances. Debt binds you, regardless of how well-dressed you appear.
Then there's the question of bad investment. Sending money home for projects without sufficient checks, investing in things you don't understand, or neglecting to establish assets in the UK might all result in you being poorer than you believe. The goal is not just to earn money but to make it grow. If all your income disappears into consumption, you are running in circles. Wealth requires foresight, planning and discipline—otherwise, your money becomes dust in the wind.
