One of the most significant cultural shocks that many Nigerians face after moving to the UK is the difference in how marriage feels abroad.  Back home, the community and extended family play an active role in keeping a marriage balanced; there is always someone to counsel, correct, or intervene.  But in the UK, it’s just the two of you, dealing with your differences, bills, and stress.  That is why marital management is essential.  Marriage is more than just love; it is also about wisdom, patience, and management.  Without these, even two good people can drift apart in a foreign country.

Managing a marriage abroad begins with managing expectations.  Many Nigerians grew up with clearly defined gender roles: men provide, women nurture.  However, the UK system does not always make that structure realistic. Both partners often have to work, share bills, and share chores. If you bring rigid expectations into that environment, conflict will become constant. The key is to adapt without losing respect for each other’s roles. A wise couple learns to ask, “What works best for us?” rather than “What’s the traditional way?”

Communication is another key component of marital management.  In Nigeria, we occasionally dismiss issues with silence, prayer, or avoidance.  However, in the United Kingdom, unresolved issues fester, because life moves quickly and isolation breeds silence.  You must learn to speak calmly, not critically.  Listening to your spouse with empathy can solve more problems than shouting ever could.  Marriage is not a courtroom, but rather a classroom, where both partners learn on a daily basis.  Sometimes you’ll fail the test.  Other days, you’ll pass with flying colours.

Finally, never underestimate the spiritual and emotional side of marriage. Life abroad can be cold, both literally and emotionally. Work, stress, and loneliness can quietly separate hearts. That’s why couples must feed their bond intentionally. Pray together. Laugh together. Spend time without gadgets. Marriage is not a responsibility to endure; it’s a relationship to nurture.
