One of the biggest challenges Nigerians face, both at home and abroad, is entitlement. Too many individuals assume that if you are overseas, you owe them something. They expect money, gifts, and unwavering support without regard for your own troubles. On the other hand, some immigrants develop entitlements while overseas, expecting the government or community to constantly bear their load. This thinking is problematic, because it inhibits progress and ruins relationships.
Entitlement breeds animosity. Those who feel entitled never appreciate what you provide. Instead, they want more, as if it is their entitlement. They forget that every pound in your wallet was earned via hard effort. Over time, this entitlement depletes you emotionally and financially, leaving you bitter and burdened. Relationships weaken, because they are no longer built on love, but on constant demands.

The entitlement mindset also undermines personal responsibility. When people believe others owe them something, they stop pushing themselves to succeed. They wait for handouts rather than creating chances. In the diaspora, this is a trap. If you rely too heavily on assistance, relatives, or friends, you will never know the dignity and growth that comes with independence. Entitlement makes you feel small, because it convinces you that you don't have to try.
Setting boundaries is necessary for breaking away from entitlement. It is fine to assist, but it is not acceptable to bear the weight of everyone's expectations. Learn to say no without guilt. Teach individuals to value effort over handouts. Most essentially, check yourself—make sure you are not the one who believes you are entitled to have your problems solved by others. Growth stems from responsibility, not dependency.
